MPHA Executive Board Retreat & Strategic Planning

On November 30 and December 1, 2017, MPHA’s executive board met in Bozeman for the annual board retreat. The majority of this meeting was dedicated to rewriting MPHA’s strategic plan and outlining goals and priorities for the next three years. Jeanie Holt, APHA Council of Affiliates Past Chair and Past President of the New Hampshire Public Health Association, facilitated our two-day discussion. On the first day, Jeanie shared a summary and insight based on the results of our self-assessment and presented on APHA’s core strategies framework. The core strategies are comprised of three focus areas: strengthening public health practice, building a public health movement, and aligning organizational infrastructure and capacity. After discussing the benefits of this framework, the executive board decided to move forward with creating a strategic plan that aligns with these three core strategies. The second day of our retreat was spent working in small groups developing specific objectives and tactics for each of these focus areas.

Objectives under the strengthening public health practice core strategy include increasing the public health workforce’s ability to be involved in local and state policy decisions by providing training and education; ensuring that all training and educational opportunities are linked to public health competencies; and establishing a process to engage MPHA members through networking and partnerships. Objectives under building a public health movement include raising the visibility of public health by developing a tool kit for the Montana public health workforce; increasing MPHA statewide partnerships; and improving regional member engagement. Objectives under aligning organizational capacity and infrastructure include growing financial sustainability and creating a succession plan for the executive director and board positions. The board will be finalizing the 2018-2021 MPHA Strategic Plan in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more details and be sure to look for the plan on the MPHA website!
