Montana Public Health Association Conference 2007

"Setting and Implementing Public Health Policy" was the theme of this year's Montana Public Health Association's annual conference. It opened on September 11, 2007 with MPHA president Terri Hocking requesting a moment of silence to commemorate that fateful day six years earlier. The tragic events of 9-11 have influenced public health policy.

More than 150 public health professionals from throughout Montana attended the 28th annual conference, September 11- 13, 2007 in Helena. Attendees grappled with policy issues surrounding foodborne illness, emergency preparedness and infectious and chronic diseases.

Deborah Klein Walker, Ed.D, Pesident of the American Public Health Association (APHA) oulined the need for politiacal will and social strategies to improve public health. Dr. William Atkinson, M.D., M.P.H. CDC Immunization Program provided an update on new vaccines.

Thirty different breakout sessions gave participants a wide variety of presentations to attend. Topics included: health communication, emerging technologes, comunicable disease , leveraging support for public health in Montana and more.  There was an optional four-hour course on avian influenza rapid response training.
